What Is Possible?
This year, the Music and Arts Department at Wesley have a goal: to do what is possible.
This will take shape in various forms. In concerts and programs. In church-wide opportunities and seminars. Some of our ideas are still just rough sketches on napkins!
As we ask this question in various ways, we need your feedback. What aren’t we doing that we could be doing? How else can we accomplish our underlying goal and mission: to see the people of God worship Him in all forms and media?
In other words, what’s possible?
Let me know what you think is possible in 2010. Call me, 634-1412 x15, or email me

Wesley is pioneering several new opportunities for children’s music, but we need your help. On Wednesday evenings during our Wednesday Night Supper program, we need parent volunteers and coordinators to assist Pam Lancaster in the direction of our Kids Jam Choirs. Also, in the spring, we will need parent support and assistance in our Spring Musical. Want to see vibrant Children’s Ministries? Join in and become a part.

Leading music during worship is a sacred calling. Our Handbell choir, the Wesley Ringers, as well as our small Handbell Ensemble, frequently ring for the 8:15 and 10:45 services, and for special occasions in the community. We welcome experienced ringers and/or those skilled in reading music to join us.

This group of singers is comprised of men from the Chancel Choir who love to praise the Lord through song. They occasionally sing for the 8:15 and 10:45 services and always bless the congregation. This group is open to all singing men at Wesley. Rehearsals are scheduled, as needed, before performances.

This is a group of 4-part singers. They sing frequently for the 8:15 service and occasionally at the 10:45 service. We encourage any singers to join us, especially those attending the 8:15 worship hour. It is a great opportunity to serve through music at Wesley. Rehearsals are scheduled, as needed, before performances.

Beginning in January of 2010, Wesley is creating a Gospel Men’s Quartet to sing periodically in the 8:15 and 10:45 worship services. Quartet doesn’t always mean 4 - as many men as would like to participate are welcome (Tenor 1, Tenor 2, Bass 1, Bass 2).

The choir is one of the most essential parts of our worship story at Wesley. Music provides the framework for all we do in worship and helps craft the telling of the narrative itself. For many, the main story is told in the music! The Choir lifts our spirits as they lead us each Sunday.

Worship is not a spectator sport. Everyone has been equipped to participate - what is your talent, how can you respond to God’s blessing in your life? Periodically throughout the year, Worship Outside the Box encourages us all to explore God’s gifts in various forms and media. We are in constant need of artists and creators to help guide, plan and implement these compelling services at Wesley.

As Wesley grows, the importance of our contemporary worship story increases. The OASIS ministry team leads the OASIS worship service and provides support for the various aspects of this service. We have a near constant need for volunteers to help as projectionists, greeters, worship coordinators and musicians. As we seek to grow this area of ministry at Wesley, we need your help to improve the dynamics of this valuable worship service.
THE INSTRUMENTS IN OUR NEW SANCTUARY
Our new 41-rank Zimmer pipe organ was installed in June of 2005. This stunning instrument is the largest organ in the area and certainly the most thrilling to see and hear, boasting nearly 2,500 pipes. Its focal point is the Trompette en Chamade, the copper horizontal pipes under the Rose window in the chancel area.
The new Yamaha seven-foot grand piano in the sanctuary is an excellent companion to the Zimmer pipe organ. Traditionally, in our 10:45 services on Sunday, hymns are played often in organ/piano duets. Norma Lucas has been our pianist at Wesley for the past 15 years.
Beth Humber has been the organist and music associate at Wesley since May of 2003. Her passion is sacred music and she delights in working with church musicians and helping them to worship and praise our Lord through music. A former resident of Atlanta, Beth accepted her position upon the invitation of Joe Walters, former Director of Music at Wesley, and the Staff Parish Relations Committee, after Beth’s husband, Dr. D.D., retired from Life University in Marietta. She was actively involved in the planning for and acquiring of the organ, even before moving to St. Simons Island. She also encouraged Wesley to purchase bells and begin a handbell program.
